CIRCULAR WATER CITIES: How can we harness urban water resources as our cities grow?

As our cities grow so do our water demands, straining our water supplies and environment. However, there are two largely untapped water resources that will also continue to grow over time: urban stormwater and wastewater.

A circular water city seeks to harness these ‘waste’ resources to enhance water security while reducing pollution and enhancing liveability. This should be our priority in driving a circular economy, yet progress is slow – Melbourne has a mere 9% water circularity.

Join us for a compelling panel discussion on building circular water cities, sharing real-world scenarios and solutions to accelerate progress.

Panelists

Celeste Morgan, Arup (also AWA's Water Professional of the year!)
Opening presentation sharing circular city scenarios
Celeste is Arup's Integrated Water Management leader for Australasia. Celeste brings together a unique blend of skills and experience in environmental engineering, urban design, sustainability and planning that gives her a unique appreciation of how water can shape liveability. She led the development of Melbourne's catchment scale IWM plans and explored the potential of stormwater and recycled water reuse as part of the development of the Water for Life strategy. She was recently named the Australian Water Professional of the Year.

Chris Chesterfield, Monash Sustainable Development Institute
Stormwater reform and water sensitive cities research

Chris is a Professor of Practice at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute where he is a key strategic thinker and research leader with a focus on water governance, urban and water planning and city scale transitions to more sustainable and liveable futures. Chris is nationally recognized for his leadership in waterway and urban water management and for his contribution to establishing Melbourne as a world leader in water sensitive urban design. He previously held roles as General Manager at Melbourne Water and CEO of the Office of Living Victoria before joining Monash University. He has contributed to advancing water and urban planning practice through a number of other recent roles including as chair of several Ministerial advisory committees that have led to significant planning and legislative reforms. He is a non-executive director at Barwon Water and chair of the Birrarung Council, a bicultural statutory body that acts as the ‘voice for the Yarra River’.

Phoebe Mack, South East Water

Phoebe is the Integrated Water Planning Manager at South East Water, where she works to create liveable, resilient communities through supply of alternative water. Her team manages the Aquarevo Housing Estate which trials IWM solutions at development scale and plans the supply of recycled water to service the fast paced growth in infill housing development. Her work also involves projects that supply stormwater and recycled water for open space irrigation. Phoebe is also on the Board of Directors for Water Stewardship Asia Pacific, which is becoming more essential in urban Australia with big water users like Data Centres stepping up their presence – bringing opportunities to promote IWM principles whilst supporting this thirsty industry. Prior to joining South East Water, Phoebe worked for over a decade supporting development programs in Pacific Island Countries, where unique water security challenges have led to innovative fit-for-purpose water supply arrangements over many generations.
