Join the Newcastle AWA sub-branch of the NSW committee for a double treat! Firstly on offer is a technical event that will explore how research is the frontier for the future of wastewater management.
Followed by a Careers Night that will provide an opportunity to meet and listen to water professionals talk about their experiences, technical areas and career pathways in the industry.
Brett Neilan: Professor Neilan is an expert in molecular microbiology, genetic and genomic engineering and microbial chemistry. Brett will be presenting the Geomonics of Water Quality Management including how the discovery and characterisation of cyanotoxin synthetase gene clusters has resulted in an explosion of molecular detection methods for these organisms and their toxins.
Subhasish Mitra: Dr. Mitra is an experienced process engineering researcher with strong background in the multi-phase flow systems using high speed imaging, thermal imaging, PIV (particle image velocimetry), image processing, CFD (Computational fluid dynamics) and DEM (discrete element modelling) tools in mineral processing, iron and steelmaking and wastewater treatment applications.
This talk will address some of the emerging wastewater treatment technologies, namely use of micro-nanobubbles to improve anaerobic digestion (AD) process which is widely deployed for waste remediation along with cogeneration of biogas as a renewable energy source.
CAREERS NIGHT (sponsored by BECAhunterh20)
This free event is open to all students interested in gaining an insight into the water industry and is particularly suited to final year students from the engineering and science faculties. Following guest speaker presentations there will be a networking opportunity with industry professionals
Zoe Rogers: - Hunter Water
:Zoe is an Environmental Scientist with 15 years' experience in the water and wastewater sector as well as the not-for-profit sector. She has had several roles across various disciplines at Hunter Water since starting there in 2014; currently as a Trade Waste Technical Officer. Specialist areas include management of chemical pollutants and environmental systems modelling.
Michael Carter: - BECAHunterH20
Michael is a chartered chemical engineer with 12 years’ experience in the water industry who was recently awarded Young Water Professional of the Year 2022. Michael originated from a small regional NSW community and has since developed a passion for working together in partnership with regional councils to improve treatment plant performance and water safety for the benefit of local communities by providing technical advice and operational support.
Harrison Callen: - EMM Consulting
Harry is a young professional working as a Graduate Water Resource Engineer at EMM consulting in their Newcastle office, where he works on a wide range of industry projects all around Australia. He recently completed his Environmental Engineering degree at the University of Newcastle.
