Water in the Community

Posted 4 October 2017

The program for this year’s South Australian Branch Conference, on 18 August, was jam packed with high calibre keynote speakers, panellists and paper presentations.

Australian Water Association South Australian Branch President, Mark Gobbie, commenced proceedings by welcoming the 101 attendees and introducing the keynote speakers: Sandy Pitcher, Professor Craig Simmons, and Ken Long.

Each of these speakers encouraged the audience to think outside the box when considering the challenges and opportunities facing the water industry, particularly in how we involve the broader community.

Lunch was the perfect opportunity for attendees to visit the trade display. This year eight outstanding companies took up this opportunity to share their expertise and products - Australian Water Quality Centre; Bioaction; Hach; ISC Services; RPC Pipe Systems; SWAN Analytical Instruments; The Water & Carbon Group; and Vinidex.

The three themes for the paper presentations this year were: water resources, urban water, and cultural perspectives in water management. Without fail these paper presentations showcased some of the excellent water work going on in South Australia.

This year the accolade of Best Presentation went to Ben Denison, SA Water.

The theme throughout all of the presentations this year was water in the community, and this carried through to the panel discussion in the closing session. Neil Palmer ably facilitated the panel  of four, which comprised: Craig Katz, founder & CEO, Purus and Australian Produce Collective; Kerry Rowlands, General Manager Customer Delivery, SA Water; Ben Bruce, Group Executive Director, DEWNR; and Paul Shanks, General Manager Barossa Infrastructure Ltd.

The take-away message: water is essential for our communities to be thriving, socially, economically and environmentally; now is the time for us to challenge the traditional and explore the opportunities.
