SA Young Water Professionals Mentoring Breakfast

The SA Young Water Professionals Committee held its first Mentoring event for 2016, introducing the first group of mentors and mentees as part of the redeveloped program. The early morning breakfast event was well attended and heard presentations from Allwater Client Liaison Manager, Lionel Ho and the Director of Hunter Careers, Samantha Badcock. After presentations, the mentoring pairs broke off to establish their partnerships and discuss the presentations, while the remaining participants held a group discussion on the key themes raised by the presenters.

Lionel presented on the benefits he has gained from mentoring, including how mentoring started his involvement in the Australian Water Association and his involvement in reinvigorating the Young Water Professionals program. He encouraged program participants to build their knowledge and develop an area of expertise, to collaborate and partner with others and to continually stretch themselves and reach for new goals.

Samantha’s talk looked at how to get the most out of a mentoring relationship, both as a mentee and a mentor. Samantha provided examples of her mentoring experiences through a range of perspectives, including overcoming her fear and asking Jane Lomax Smith to be her mentor as well as her experience mentoring an older partner, demonstrating that age is no barrier to success. Samantha encouraged everyone to keep an open mind about their mentoring and to have a vision about what they want to achieve.

Mentors and Mentees

With that in mind, it’s not too late to get involved with the SA YWP Mentoring program! We are continuously accepting new mentees and looking for people who are prepared to mentor others. We try to match each mentee with a mentor that suits the skills and outcomes that they are looking to develop and provide support to help your mentoring journey.
