Managing Up in Today’s Cross-Generational Workplace
Posted 8 June 2017
On 5 April 2017, the Australian Water Association’s South Australian Branch, in collaboration with event partner sponsor Morton Philips and venue sponsor WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, held a seminar on Managing Up in Today’s Cross-Generational Workplace.
The theme of the event was managing generational diversity in the modern workplace in order to create a productive and harmonious working environment. There were presentations and tips from industry and HR professionals as well as a facilitated panel discussion session with generational panellists consisting of a Baby Boomer, a Gen X, a Gen Y and a Gen Z across private industry, academia and government. The seminar was designed to assist in managing up and down the generations via sharing of thoughts, tips and answers from the different generational panellists with questions from the audience.
The seminar was divided into four sessions:
Session 1: Presentations by HR professionals Ms Alison Surjan, Director, Consulting Services, Morton Philips Recruitment and Managing Director Philip Morton on their experiences as a young director working alongside a senior partner and observations of their clients’ workplace.
Session 2: Brainstorming session of ‘Tips on Working in a Harmonious Workplace’ facilitated by Kerrie Akkermans, Australian Water Association SA State Manager.
Session 3: Facilitated panel discussions with our generational panellists which included representatives from Flinders University and the University of South Australia, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, and SA Water.
Session 4: Post-event networking session.
Approximately 30 delegates attended the day which included members of industry, government and academia spread across the varying generations from Baby Boomers to Gen Z. The presentations were of high quality and explored a range of topics and modern-day workplace issues. Feedback from the delegates throughout the sessions was very positive and it was suggested that a similar event be held in future.
