Meet the new Queensland Member Engagement Manager

Carlie Sargent is the new AWA Queensland Member Engagement Manager. She was the Skills Manager for the Queensland Water Directorate - qldwater for the past three and a half years and took up her role with AWA just in time for QWater’21 on the Gold Coast.

What drew you into the water industry?
After working with qldwater’s parent body, IPWEAQ as the Director, Member Services I had an opportunity to take up the role of Skills Manager with qldwater. I was keen to learn something new and have been amazed at the variety of roles and career opportunities in the industry.

Who or what do you draw inspiration from?
I’m really interested in hearing people’s life stories and journeys. The actions and pursuits of regular people are what I find most inspirational, such as those of close friends, family and colleagues and those I hear from through podcasts.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have a tween and a teenager so spare time is somewhat of a luxury, but I love to read, cook, spend time with family and friends, walk the dog and plan holidays, particularly something with a bit of adventure. Hiking, skiing or beach trips are our favourite holidays.

If you were a breed of dog, which would you be and why?
I guess I’d have to say a Shoodle, a Shih Tzu cross toy poodle, which is our dog, Holly. Her life seems quite enviable - she rests a lot, gets lots of attention and eats good food.

What do you believe is currently the greatest challenge for your part of the water industry?
It is really challenging for water service providers, particularly in regional and remote areas, to attract and retain the skills they need to deliver safe, secure and sustainable urban water services. Addressing this was the focus of my role with qldwater in supporting the Queensland Water Skills Partnership, which recently won the Queensland Premier’s Industry Collaboration Training Award, of which I’m incredibly proud.

What messages would you like to give to your colleagues in the Queensland water sector?
I can’t wait to get out and meet members, hear their water stories and work collaboratively to address industry challenges and opportunities.
