VIC YWP Seminar - 7 April 2016

2016 Vic YWP Professional Development Series Seminar 1: “Diversity in Leadership”

The first 2016 YWP Professional Development Series Seminar, “Diversity in Leadership”, kicked off in style earlier this month. Located in Minter Ellison, our three wonderful speakers challenged the views of a room full of young professionals. Overall the night was extremely successful and provoked many discussions during the networking to follow.

The night started with a welcoming from our sponsors, KBR and Viadux. It was then onto our first speaker, Lucia Cade. Lucia was introduced to the group as ‘Water Royalty’ based on her wealth of experience in the water industry in various leadership roles. Lucia spoke about the importance of diversity in the workplace and how enforcing quotas is sometimes necessary to evoke change within organisations. Lucia also spoke about leaders and how a they can be defined by the legacy they leave behind.

Following Lucia our next guest speaker was Soyun Punyadasa. Soyun was born in Sri Lanka and has since travelled around the world during his schooling and professional life. Soyun spoke about some of his personal experiences/challenges in relation to diversity, and why this topic is important to him. Using a variety of examples and research, Soyun then highlighted how diversity and difference is pivotal for creating successful teams. He emphasised to the crowd to be the change you want to see in the world and to embrace people for who they are.

After some refreshments and networking the group was ready for a shake up as Aron D’Souza promised his presentation may be a little controversial. Aron, who has had a great amount of success thus far in his short career, opened by challenging diversity stating that it is irrelevant. His message was that if you are the best at what you do and create value then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be successful. Aron spoke on many different themes which reflected his views on how to be successful in life. His presentation, while vastly different to the others, was engaging and provided the audience with some thought provoking topics and ideas.

Following the presentations, the three speakers answered questions as a panel. This created a great discussion on the topic due to the differing opinions.

Once again we would like to thank our sponsors for the night, KBR and Viadux. Minter Ellison, who again were generous enough to be our hosts for the evening provided the attendees with fantastic hospitality. We would also like to thank our speakers who were fantastic and really made this event enjoyable for all.
