Aquarevo in Lyndhurst is a distinctive urban housing development that present a unique range of unprecedented water-saving features. In this tour, you will learn how our high-tech rain to hot water and pressure sewer system operates to reduce the use of drinking water reliance. We will educate you on our water-sensitive designs that feature technology that receives weather forecasts and monitor water usage. The tour will conclude with a visit to the site of our future Water Recycling Plant which will efficiently treat and recycle wastewater within the Aquarevo Estate to return Class A water to our residents.

Join us for a full-day site tour visiting three recycled water project sites across the Geelong region.
Northern Water Reclamation Plant
Constructed in 2012, the plant was 10 years in the making with Barwon Water and Viva Energy (formerly Shell) working together to transform trade waste from the Geelong Refinery to Class A recycled water for use across refinery operations.
Since then, the plant has also commenced supply of recycled water to neighbouring Stead Park to support community recreation.
Viva Energy is delivering Australia’s most ambitious hydrogen mobility project which will offer hydrogen refuelling at the Viva Energy Hub in Geelong.
Building on our partnership with Viva we’re exploring how to use the oxygen byproduct from the hydrogen production to improve wastewater treatment at the Northern Water Plant.
This circular process involves treating water at the Northern Water Plant, after which the recycled water is used by Viva Energy to produce renewable hydrogen. The oxygen produced when generating hydrogen is captured and used by Barwon Water to enhance the treatment of wastewater which ultimately ends up as recycled water: and the cycle continues. More information here.
Hydraloop Demonstration Site
The Victorian Advanced Grey Water Recycling System Trial is a collaborative research and development project trialling Hydraloop, an innovative scalable in-property advanced greywater recycling system as one solution to reduce reliance on traditional drinking water supplies.
Seven mixed sized Hydraloop unit’s are being trialled in different use case scenario’s in the service area’s of Barwon Water, Greater Western Water and South East Water. The innovative, smart technology from the Netherland’s treat’s and recycles greywater from showers, baths and bathroom handbasin’s for toilet flushing and other purposes.
A Hydraloop unit has been installed at a purpose built fully functional bathroom/laundry set-up at the Gordon TAFE for testing, training and educational purposes.
Waurn Ponds Recycled Water Project
Barwon Water has partnered with Deakin University to extend its recycled water supply network from Mount Duneed through to Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus, where Class A recycled water will be used to irrigate the sports and recreation fields in Deakin’s elite sports precinct, reducing the university’s reliance on drinking water by around 60 per cent. This partnership with Deakin will deliver around 100 megalitres of recycled water each year to the campus, supporting the university’s Integrated Water Management Plan (IWMP).

Participants will start their Melbourne Water engagement from pick up; during the trip to the Western Treatment Plant, they will hear about its history and what they can expect during the day to arrive with some advance knowledge.
This tour has two distinct elements focused on:
• A water literacy activity at the digital education centre
• A technical visit to major infrastructure projects at WTP
More than just a sewage treatment facility, Victoria's Western Treatment Plant is a world leader in environmentally-conscious wastewater management. This hidden treasure, roughly the size of Phillip Island, remarkably doubles as a working farm and a RAMSAR-recognised international bird wetland habitat.
Part 1: The Future Water Story – Interactive Water Literacy Experience
Step into the innovative Education Centre and help design a digital 3D city in real-time, exploring how water shapes our communities. Then hop on a guided bus tour for a rare behind-the-scenes look at how wastewater is treated and reused to support a more sustainable Melbourne.
Part 2: Project Site Tours – Innovation in Action
Get up close with two major infrastructure projects driving Melbourne Water’s long-term Water for Life strategy:
Site 1: 5 West Nutrient Removal Plant
See how this cutting-edge plant improves efficiency, produces renewable energy, and helps protect Port Phillip Bay by reducing nitrogen loads—while securing recycled water supply for local growers.
Site 2: Resource Recovery and Re-Use Complex (RRRC)
Melbourne Water’s largest capital project is redefining wastewater treatment. The RRRC will boost capacity, cut carbon, and recover high-quality recycled water and valuable resources—bringing a circular economy vision to life.
Please note that filming and electronic devices (phones, laptops, tablets) are strictly prohibited during Part 2 of the tour.
