This tour will showcase two of WA’s Tertiary Institution’s R&D Facilities including the Mineral Recovery Research Centre at Edith Cowan University and the Algae Innovation Hub at Murdoch University.

Mineral Recovery Research Center (MRRC), Edith Cowan University (ECU)
The MRRC is an integrated, lab-to-pilot pipeline for applying desalination and advanced water/wastewater technologies to enable high-recovery water reuse and minerals recovery from mining tailings and waste streams. Delegates will see working systems, meet the researchers, and leave with pathways for collaborations and pilot trials. The tour showcases end-to-end visibility—from materials and module design to pilot-scale demonstrations, with a focus on mining-relevant challenges in Australia.

Algae Innovation Hub, Murdoch University
Delegates will visit Murdoch University's Algae Innovation Hub, where cutting-edge research in microalgae cultivation for saline environments is underway. The tour will highlight scalable technologies for drought resilience, high value production of algal products and nutrient recycling, with insights into how these innovations support sustainable biomass production.

The Water Research and Innovation Precinct (WRIP) is creating a sustainable and cleaner water future for Western Australia. Located in Subiaco, the Water Research and Innovation Precinct is a collaborative workspace developing new and innovative wastewater treatment and resource recovery technologies. By collaborating with global technology providers, research institutions and local industry we hope to make improvements in efficiency, sustainability and a create a positive legacy.

On this tour participants will learn about Water Corporation’s wastewater treatment journey, from a serious health and environmental problem, to a valued resource that is now recycled into drinking water. There are many research projects to see with a focus on wastewater treatment, resource recovery and greenhouse gas
reduction.

At CSIRO’s Waterford Research facility this tour will include seeing a range of biotechnical processes and environmental engineering solutions, including:

- Treatment of mine-impacted waters;
- Bioleaching of metals from low-grade ores and waste materials;
- Utilising waste streams for microalgae cultivation aimed at bioplastics production;
- Detection and characterization of pathogens in drinking water distribution systems, with a focus on Naegleria fowleri;
- Microbial electrochemical reactor technologies (e.g., microbial fuel cells
and microbial electrolysis cells)

The SSDP at Binningup (130km south of Perth) commenced in 2012 and has successfully delivered over 1 Million Megalitres since operations commenced, making it the leading producer of desalinated water in Australia and in the top 10 of the world!

The plant is designed to produce 100GL per annum to deliver approximately 30% of Perth’s water. As the plant is a key component of Perth’s water supply it is a full year 24/7 operation with limited shutdowns and the key to success is a well-planned asset management and operation with focussed efficient 24/7
shutdowns.

The tour will provide an overview of the plant, the processes and challenges it faces as a baseload desalination water source.
