IWAA Webinar

Written by Laura Gottsfritz | Mar 8, 2023 5:00:36 AM

Join us for a Leading Global Practices for Smart Resilient Cities webinar to discuss innovative solutions to building more resilient cities and systems across many social-technical contexts - from cities in advanced economies to developing cities, from large cities to small island states.

IWA Australia (IWAA) is a branch committee of AWA and aims to connect the Australian water industry with the activities of the International Water Association (IWA). IWA is a non-profit organisation and knowledge hub for the global water sector that seeks to connect water professionals worldwide to find solutions to the world's water challenges.

With a focus on the Asia-Pacific region, this panel brings together four thought-leaders to discuss leading practices for smart resilient cities.  We are in one of the most rapidly urbanising regions in the world.  Regionally we are facing increasing challenges to meet the chronic and acute effects of our changing climate; water security, flooding, increasing urbanisation to name a few.  Cities are employing smart solutions to meet these challenges.  The panel will convene water industry practitioners from the Asia-Pacific region to discuss innovative solutions to building more resilient cities and systems across many social-technical contexts - from cities in advanced economies to developing cities, from large cities to small island states.

Professor Tony Wong is a civil engineer and  Professor in Sustainable Development at Monash University.  Tony is internationally recognised for his research and practice in sustainable urban water management, particularly in novel approaches to Water Sensitive Urban Design. Throughout his career, Tony has led collaboration and translation of research insights into innovative practices in urban water management both in Australia and overseas.

Associate Professor Fanlin Meng is Assistant Professor, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.  Professor Meng has extensive experience in complex system modelling for catchment management, wastewater discharge and resilient water management.  Professor Meng will discuss the use of big data as an early warning system for extreme events.

Dr. Amit Chanan is the Water Authority of Fiji’s (WAF) Chief Executive Officer, leading the national delivery of water-related sustainable development goals.  Dr Chanan aims to improve WAF’s journey toward service excellence and build resilient water and wastewater infrastructure to all Fijians.

Sarah Hiong is currently Senior Assistant Director (Masterplanning & Research) of Coastal Protection Department of PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency. Her team formulates foundational planning strategies and principles that guide the implementation of coastal protection infrastructure to achieve long-term coastal resilience to climate change, and plans for research studies to plug knowledge gaps and support the Department’s modelling and engineering work. Prior to this, Sarah led PUB’s metering operations, which involved customer engagement and driving digital transformation of metering business processes.

The panel will be moderated by IWA President Tom Mollenkopf, and is a prelude to a global conversation on the same topic, to be held at OzWater, Sydney on 10 May 2023.
