AWA VIC YWP Regional Conference 2019

AWA VIC YWP Regional Conference 2019
Join our VIC Young Water Professionals at the upcoming regional conference, taking place over a day and a half across multiple locations in the Bendigo and Echuca regions; it promises to be insightful, collaborative and educational.

Don't miss out and register ASAP as accommodation at the Quest Echua is now limited and dinner sold out!
New registration options now available.

The Regional Conference is a great way for YWPs to network, learn more about the water industry and the experiences, successes a
nd challenges faced by water authorities across regional Victoria whilst developing tangible skills. Even though the conference is most suited to young water professionals (under 35 or less than 10 years' experience) we certainly welcome anyone keen on learning more about current trends in the industry and wanting to network with fellow water professionals over the two days.

This year we will be joined by, among others:

  • Laurie Curran Water – Managing Director Laurie Curran will present will focus on organics removal processes for drinking water treatment plants with practical application data around MIEX treatment,  currently being used at Coliban Water's Gunbower Treatment Plant and both spiral wound and hollow fibre nanofiltration processes.
  • Coliban Water’s Chief Operating Officer: Neville Pearce – who will be discussing the challenges of operating in changing climatic conditions – including the impacts of climate change on the annual water outlook, annual operating plan and decision trees and triggers for water restrictions, and
  • The Bureau of Meteorology’s Senior Hydrologist: Dr Louise Wilson - who will discuss future climate trends across regional VIC and the major factors which drive these changes, as well as the expected impacts on the Victorian environment and water industry.

Site Tours of the Lauriston Reservoir and the Eppalock Pump Station will provide insight and understanding of the regions water sources and waterways.

facilitated by Seanna Davidson will provide an opportunity to develop some tangible and transferable skills in ‘Systems thinking’, an approach to systematically find solutions to complex problems – we will tackle:

The regional centre of Bendigo (where) requires a sustainable drinking water supply (need) during projected population doubling and reduction in water catchment supply with no increase in financial investment (contraints)

During the 2.5hr workshop we'll briefly review key concepts of systems thinking and a framework for systems change. We'll touch on systems practices and explore how they influence our ability to engage in our work in a more holistic manner. We'll spend the majority of our session working in small groups to explore and unpack a complex problem specific to regional Victoria.  Participants will have the opportunity to apply systems thinking tools and practices which can be relevant in their own places of work.  Participants will be provided a set of activity guidelines after the workshop as a take-home resource.

This conference is also a great way to network with other Young Water Professionals and enjoy dinner and drinks on a paddle steamer travelling down the great Murray River - what a perfect setting for this!

About the event

The annual VIC YWP Regional Conference focuses on current challenges facing the water sector, specifically in regional Victoria, such as drought management and climate change. It consists of a program of technical presentations, workshops, site visits and social activities to encourage networking.

To support the professional and personal development of the next generation of water leaders, the Australian Water Association's Victorian YWPs have organised a regional conference which includes many opportunities to learn, participate and network over two days from an array of experts in the industry.

For 2019 the conference will be held in the regional areas of Bendigo and Echuca.
