The Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) International Water Stewardship Standard was launched in 2014 at a meeting of the United Nations Global Compact CEO Water Mandate in Lima, Peru. The system is now being used by large multi-nationals, farmers’ groups, industrial parks and supply chains to understand water risks and address water challenges, to collaborate with peers and communities, enhance business sustainability and social license. It has a growing list of projects in the Asia-Pacific, South Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America and Europe with financial support from business, government and philanthropists.
This session will introduce participants to the basic principles of good water stewardship, the drivers for water stewardship, the business case for good water stewardship, core elements of the AWS International Water Stewardship Standard. It will offer case studies on how the system is being used by business and other water using sites, how governments are engaging with water stewardship in Australia and internationally and how the system is building collaborative approaches to water between businesses and between business, government and community. The session will allow time for discussion of particular issues and the potential for application in Western Australia.
