Join AWA’s technical committee for a one-of-a kind, behind-the-scenes expedition to the Kangaroo Creek Dam Safety Upgrade. This major project commenced in early in 2016 and is expected to be completed late in 2019.
Taking place on the morning of our Leadership in Water Conference, this technical event will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Witness a working large-scale civil construction project resulting in improved flood protection for Adelaide
  • Learn about the intricacies and challenges between designing and executing a large scale project
  • Hear about the work required to increase the dam’s ability to withstand earthquakes and comply with the new ANCOLD (Australian National Committee on Large Dams) standards
  • Experience a working project site and hear from project personnel demonstrating a strong relationship between stakeholders

The site visit will highlight recent developments including:

  • Major spillway upgrade in progress which included excavating and blasting of 300,000m³ of rock to increase spillway width from 13m to 52m
  • Significant remedial and safety works required on the Gorge Road natural rock face to maintain safety for the construction team below
  • Large volume of rock embankment construction (partially complete) on the downstream side
  • An explanation of concrete works completed to the upstream concrete face of the dam wall
  • Works to strengthen the embankment including increasing the height of the top of the dam wall to provide improved flood protection
  • Provision of improved access arrangements to the extended outlet tunnel downstream of the dam
  • Widening the existing ski-jump spillway discharge structure
