“Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals under climate change: new partnerships for transformation”
Workshop at Ozwater’19, Tuesday 7th May, 4:00 – 5:30pm, Workshop Room 2
Together, the International Water Association Australia (IWAA) and the AWA SDG Specialist Network led a vibrant and productive dialogue with attendees and challengers from different sectors beyond water. The aim of the workshop was to activate participants on how they can pursue new partnerships to implement the SDGs. The workshop explored the emerging priorities created by the aspirations of the SDGs combined with the pressures of climate change, and will guide participants in developing action plans for new partnerships dealing with emerging priorities in energy, food, health, insurance and capacity building. If you would like to hear more about the outcomes of the workshop, please get in touch with the IWAA Committee.
Nutrient Removal and Resource Recovery Conference, Brisbane Nov 2018
The Advanced Water Management Centre at The University of Queensland, Queensland Urban Utilities, IWAA and AWA were proud to host the 2018 IWA Nutrient Removal and Recovery Conference in November 2018, welcoming over 285 delegates to the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Brisbane for a full 3-day program.
The technical program had many highlights including Keynotes: Haydee De Clipper (DC Water, USA), Mike Johns (Johns Environmental), Susanne Schmidt (University of Queensland) and Willy Verstraete (Ghent University, Belgium). Theses visionaries of NRR combined with the 157 papers presented really highlighted that Nutrient Removal and Recovery is necessary to meet the challenges of the global water cycle. The Best Paper of the conference was awarded to George Wells, Northwestern University for his outstanding presentation, Comammox Nitrospira dominate ammonia oxidation in a mainstream low dissolved oxygen nitrification reactor, and the Best Poster Award went to Paula Andrea Hernandez from The University of Queensland for her poster, Selective electrodialysis system for the extraction of caproic acid from mixed VFA solutions.
The conference ended with the technical tours to the Nereda Plant in Kingaroy and the Innovation Centre at Queensland Urban Utilities. Thanks to our sponsors Queensland Urban Utilities, Veolia, Johns Environmental, Aqualia, GHD, City of Gold Coast and Aquatec Maxcon.

The 5th Conference was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne in February 2018 and included 2 days of oral and poster presentations and workshops, and half a day of site visits to the Yarra Valley Water’s Waste to Energy (WtE) plant and MCG’s recycled water facility. The conference theme was “Connect. Collaborate. Accelerate.”, and had a strong SDG, networking and professional development focus. The 2018 conference was the biggest one so far, with over 200 registered attendees. The IWAA was a session sponsor, supporting the SDG panel discussion, which was very well received by attendees.
