The Australian population continues to increase as does the demand for water by all sectors of the economy.  Membranes are now the centre piece to efforts to clean up wastewater, poor quality brackish water, and stormwater.   While they are being used in an ever expanding range of ways, the problems and limitations remain and the search is never ending for new approaches to minimize membrane fouling, increase product yield and reduce costs.

The AWA Membranes and Desalination Specialty IV Conference has a problem solving focus. How does one reduce or even eliminate bio-fouling of the membrane? Can we improve the pre-treatment process to minimise damage to the membranes and prolong their life?   Will nano-membranes be capable of fulfilling their promise when used at commercial scale ?     How much concern should be given to the debate about health risks associated with their use?  How successful have efforts been to reduce the noise problem associated with energy recovery devices in plant operations?
