Tour 1 – North Head STP
North Head STP is the first hydro-electric plant in Australia to generate green energy power from treated sewerage. The hydro-electric plant works by capturing energy from treated wastewater falling down a 60-metre shaft and generates enough green energy to power almost 1,000 homes for a year
This plant alone has reduced Sydney Water’s greenhouse gas emissions by over 12,000 tonnes a year - the equivalent of taking 3,000 cars off the road. It is one step closer to making Sydney Water’s operations carbon neutral for energy and electricity use by 2020.
The new hydro-electric plant and a recently installed methane gas cogeneration unit means that North Head sewage treatment plant can now generate about 40 per cent of its own power. As well as reducing the amount of electricity the plant takes from the main grid, this upgrade will benefit the local community by improving the plant’s reliability and reducing the number of truck movements to and from the plant.
Tour 2 – Desalination Plant, Kurnell
Sydney’s Desalination Plant is the biggest water infrastructure project completed in NSW since Warragamba Dam was built 60 years ago. The massive infrastructure project was delivered on time, and $60 million under budget and is the world’s second largest desalination plant.
The plant at Kurnell is the largest desalination plant in Australia and has been designed so it can be quickly doubled in size if required in future. The 18-kilometre pipeline connecting the plant to Sydney’s main water supply involves innovative construction techniques, including the laying of twin 1,400-millimetre diameter pipes in trenches across the floor of Botany Bay – being a world engineering first
The desalination plant was built by the Blue Water Joint Venture, comprising John Holland and Veolia Water Australia. The pipeline was built by the Water Delivery Alliance, comprising Bovis Lend Lease, McConnell Dowell, Worley Parsons, Kellogg Brown & Root, Environmental Resources Management and Sydney Water.
Sydney’s desalination plant will supply up to 15 per cent of Sydney’s water needs, and its power needs are fully offset by renewable energy produced at Capital Wind Farm in Bungendore.
Cost for the tours is $30.00 which includes a boxed lunch
