It is a long time since AWA
convened a specialist Conference on Odours but the subject gets more
difficult to ignore by the day. “It smells” is the
most frequent complaint that water industry professionals hear from the
public and even their own colleagues.
In the past, complains such as this could
be dismissed if the responsible body was seen to be the prior occupant
of a site or region. Changes to environmental regulations now
place the onus and costs for mitigation of odours from sewage treatment
works on the plant owner and operator irrespective of history of
occupancy of the site. Odour discharges from brewing,
petrochemicals and chemicals industries, and from foodstuffs processing
are similarly affected. These industries are also required to meet
new codes of practice. They often look to the water industry to provide
advice and mitigation
Capturing emissions is neither an easy
task nor one which can always be 100% successful. Difficulties in
measuring emissions, identifying the responsible agents and neutralising
them have been damaging to relationships between the public and their
servicing utility. This has been complicated by debate about
whether or not discharges are laden with viral spores and bacterial
particles with potential impacts on human health.

Jennifer Barclay is a Senior Scientist in
TRC’s Atmospheric Studies Group with over 16 years experience in
applied meteorology and atmospheric sciences.
She has conducted and managed many dispersion modeling
studies for all types of industries worldwide. She has in-depth research
and industrial experience with a wide range of dispersion modeling
systems from simple Gaussian plume models to more complex Lagrangian
Puff models, particle models and prognostic numerical meteorological
models.
Ms. Barclay was the onshore meteorologist for USA’s
Team Dennis Connor in his bid to win the 30th and 31st America Cup
Sailing races, and played a significant role in the 2001-2002 Volvo
Round the World Ocean Race. Ms Barclay has been involved in developing
modeling guidance documents at a ministerial level in New Zealand and
state level in Australia.
Jenny has assisted as co-instructor in approximately 50
introductory 3-5 day and advanced dispersion modeling courses worldwide.
Ms. Barclay has published several papers in International journals
relating to air quality and atmospheric modeling.

emissions from industrial and municipal STPs
- Management of odours from wastewater
treatment of food, chemicals and petrochemical industries
- Plumes, dispersion modeling,
- Bio-aerosols and health
risks
- Experiences in meeting regulatory
requirements and changes to volatile emissions laws
