Committee Biographies

Dr. Chris Chow

Chris is a Senior Research Specialist with the Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC), SA Water. Since joined SA Water in 1995, he has been involved in a number of major water treatment related research projects. His experience included, natural organic matter , cyanobacteria, optimisation of water treatment processes, disinfection control, distribution system management, distribution system modelling, disinfection by-products, recycled water, on-line monitoring and various analytical techniques related to water quality investigation and process optimisation. Chris obtained his M.App.Sc in environmental monitoring and PhD in analytical chemistry from University of South Australia and gained 5-year postgraduate experience prior to joining the water industry. He is also actively involved in academic research with three academic titles, Adjunct Professor, Affiliate Associate Professor and Adjunct Research Professor, from the University of South Australia, University of Adelaide and the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, respectively and with a strong track record in scientific publication, authored and co-authored over 250 technical papers in water science journals and conferences. He is the leader of the Advanced Water Quality Sensing and Optimisation group, SA Water Centre for Water Management and Reuse, UniSA and is an associate editor of the Journal of Water Science and Technology.

Luke Zappia
Luke has 28 years medical pathology and environmental microbiology experience. In 2006, he joined the Water Corporation’s of Western Australia Water Treatment Process Expertise Group as a Senior Water Treatment Microbiologist Process Specialist. He has worked on range of projects involving water treatment plant commissioning, process trouble shooting and optimisation, treatment operations and management, automation and feed forward control. Luke is project manager and technical leader on a number of Corporation collaborative R&D projects.  Luke has been awarded a BSc. (Env. Sc.) with Honours from Edith Cowan University and a Diploma in Applied Science from the Advanced Manufacturing and Technical Centre. Luke’s has published and authored 2 book chapters, 17 international journal articles, 83 technical reports and 17 conference papers. He is a recipient of the CSIRO Award for excellence in collaboration and team building (2002), recipient of the Community for Positive Solutions (CAPS) Award for Environmental Justice (2009), advisor to the CSIRO Water for a healthy Country Flagship and a CSIRO Alumni member. 

Sally Williamson
Coming from a background in biotechnology and having spent quite a few years in the Sydney Water’s analytical laboratories, Sally has been a process engineer with CH2M HILL in Sydney for over five years. She specialises in water quality and analysis requirements and has used her skills on a wide range of projects types; spanning from water and wastewater treatment through to coal seam gas water quality assessment and recycled water quality planning and management. She sees water quality monitoring and analysis as vital components of risk management and looks forward to getting involved and seeing where the committee can take the state of water quality monitoring and analysis over the next two years, and into the more distant future.
