It was thirst, sweat, and tears at the 4th annual Amazing Race, hosted by the Australian Water Association’s Queensland Young Water Professionals (QLD YWP) committee. More than 80 competitors from across South East QLD took part in the race, held on the 28th of October 2017, which was exclusively sponsored by Stantec.
A total of 18 teams signed up, decked out in their funkiest costumes. There was a large spread of organisations represented including Aquatec Maxcon, Arup, Aurecon, Engeny, GHD, Gold Coast Water and Waste, Jacobs, Moody, Stantec, Trility, Unitywater, The University of Queensland and WSP.
This year was a race of strategy, brawns and brains, with each group given challenge sheets and a map to navigate their course to earn the highest points within two and a half hours. Clues were filled with water-related puns, which left the competitors on thin ice. The pressure was paramount as teams travelled to parts of Brisbane City, Southbank and West End to find clues, take selfies at famous monuments, and win points.
All the competitors made it to the finish line at Pig’n’Whistle, West End for a cool drink, tasty food and relaxed networking. Aurecon who was represented by Alex Wise, Chloe Niven, Chris Dugdale and Ruby Mayson, cruised into first place and won the coveted Amazing Race Trophy. Second place went to last year’s winners, Arup – represented by Cameron McDonald, Laura Miranda, Margie Dickson, Rene Garcia and Tyrone Chin. GHD mopped the floor by taking home the ‘best dressed’ team for the second year in a row. A special mention goes to Richard Savage for committing to his inflatable flamingo costume!
Credit must be given to the dedicated QLD YWP committee members for organising the event including Alice Connell, Amira Haruwarta, Elena Mejia Likosova, Huong Nguyen, Jake Robson, Richard Savage and Sharon James (QLD Branch Manager). The day could not have been possible without the generous support from Stantec, who exclusively sponsored the event.
