2017 VIC YWP Regional Conference
17-18 February 2017
Over 60 people participated in the 2017 Young Water Professionals Regional Conference hosted by North East Water and further supported by Laurie Curran Water and Bell Pumps. The theme of the conference was Flood, Fire and Drought - Managing Water in Extreme Conditions.
Our bus departed from Southern Cross Station at crack of dawn on Friday, and headed up the Hume Highway to our first stop, Euroa, where we collected some more travellers. We arrived at North East Water just in time for a delicious spread put on by the NEW folks, before we settled in for an afternoon of presentations:
1.1 Intelligent Water Network Asset Performance and Energy Optimisation Program - John Day, North East Water
1.2 Eight years of Fires, Drought and Floods at Bright - Investment in Water Security and Water Quality Improvements - Carl-Johan Rutgersson, Alister Laidlaw, North East Water
1.3 Design, Construction and Commissioning of the Freeburgh DAFF Water Treatment Plant - Jack Timmins, Laurie Curran Water
1.4 Celebrating the Resilience of Waterways - Terry McCormack, North East CMA
1.5 The Bakers Gully Dam Remediation - Sam Lalli, SMEC
1.6 Ecological Risk Assessment Informing Sensible Outcomes - Matthew Leach, North East Water
At completion, the guests boarded the bus and headed to our accommodation at Bright Chalet, approximately 100kms away. We enjoyed some free time in the lovely grounds, playing Frisbee and spike ball. The buffet meal was devoured in no time and the punters settled in for some networking.
Saturday morning we were treated to another fabulous buffet brekkie before boarding the bus for the Ovens River off-river storage and Freeburgh WTP which supply water to the towns of Bright, Porepunkah and Wandiligong. From here we headed to the newly remediated Bakers Gully Dams which have been modified to protect the township of Bright from potential flooding.
Lunch at Bright Brewery was another delicious feast to fuel everyone up for the long trip back to Melbourne.
A fantastic weekend of case studies, site visits and networking was had by all, with everyone now looking forward to next year’s conference!
