Senior Policy Analyst

The Australian Water Association is the national peak water organisation, delivering information, expertise and collaboration for sustainable water management. Our membership base is varied and we operate nationally with an active branch network across Australia. 

The Role 
We are seeking an energetic and well-connected Senior Policy Analyst to join our team, to focus on identifying, analysing, developing and supporting our policy and advocacy activities. You will be required to: 

  • Analyse information (e.g. Government policies & legislation) to extract, evaluate and communicate key findings 
  • Write succinct reports, policy positioning and briefing papers 
  • Develop & maintain effective relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues, members, volunteers and networks to identify policy needs & opportunities to respond to government enquires. 
  • Research social, economic and industry trends 
  • Manage your time effectively to set priorities, plan & organise your own work 
  • Think laterally and looking at challenges from a different perspective
  • Contribute to the overall success of the business by providing input in key business initiatives and events. 

Essential Experience 
  • 3 – 4 years’ experience in a policy development role, preferably in the water or resources sector 
  • Tertiary qualification, preferably in public policy, business, science or economics
  • Understanding of State and Commonwealth Government Policy development processes 


Experience in stakeholder management and working with volunteers, as well as experience in a member association or advocacy role will be well regarded.

Branch Manager - Tasmania

The Australian Water Association is the national peak water organisation, delivering information, expertise and collaboration for sustainable water management. Our membership base is varied and we operate nationally with an active branch network across Australia.
We’re seeking an energetic and well-connected Branch Manager for Tasmania to join our team, and support the delivery of programs and events in line with our strategic plan. You will be a strong advocate for the Association and work closely with our Sydney staff and our Tasmanian committee to help achieve our business plan objectives and targets. Reporting to the National Manager, Membership Engagement (based in Sydney), you will play a key role in enhancing Tasmania’s membership levels by servicing existing members and recruiting new members.

Key focus:

  • Facilitate and manage branch committee and sub committees in alignment with Association Constitution, by-laws and business plans.
  • Manage budgets, prepare business cases and ensure revenue targets are met.
  • Effectively manage and support state based activities, including event and award programs.
  • Produce high quality state based marketing materials using the Association’s templates.
  • Effectively manage and maintain communication activities, e.g. branch newsletters, branch web pages, events calendar and online event registrations.
  • Build and maintain positive and productive relationships with key industry stakeholders across the water sector including state/ federal agencies and departments
  • Ensure State sponsorship obligations are delivered and post-event and sponsorship reports are completed where appropriate.
  • Communicate key messages effectively and efficiently to all key internal & external stakeholders, peers etc.
  • Ensure CRM record details for Tasmania are accurate. 

To be successful it is essential that you have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in communications/PR, marketing, event management, business administration or at least 2-3 years’ relevant experience in a similar role with an association and/or water sector organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in event and project management.
  • An ability to develop and maintain relationships across a range of stakeholders.
  • An ability to manage and report to budgets.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Self-motivation and be able to work autonomously and remotely.
  • Strong collaboration skills and an ability to work as part of busy team based remotely.
  • Solid knowledge of CRM/stakeholder management systems; Experience with iMIS is an advantage.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • An understanding of the water industry is an advantage.
