The SJWP is the most prestigious international award for a high school water science research. Its purpose is to increase students' interest in water-related issues and research, and to raise their awareness and knowledge of global water challenges.  The competition is open to projects aimed at improving the quality of life through improvement of water quality, water resources management, water protection or water and wastewater treatment.  All projects must use a research oriented approach, which means that they must use scientifically accepted methodologies for experimentation, monitoring and reporting the results, including statistical analyses

The International Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) competition took place in Sweden during World Water Week, 16-22 August 2008. Each year the national winners from over 30 countries will participate in the week long educational and cultural exchange program. Finalists will attend the Stockholm Water Prize Ceremony and Royal Banquet at the Stockholm City Hall, in the presence of HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia.

Students will exhibit their projects at the Stockholm Water Symposium where they will discuss their project with the jury, researchers, politicians, and the media. The international SJWP winner will receive US$5,000 and a blue crystal sculpture.

The International SJWP was founded by the Stockholm Water Foundation. HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is the patron of the prize. It is sponsored by ITT Industries.
